Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, in the south of England, the daughter of the Reverend George Austen, Rector of Steventon, and his wife Cassandra. Jane had six brothers and a sister, also called Cassandra. Two of her brothers became admirals in the Royal Navy.

Jane started writing when she was about fourteen, and in her lifetime was seen as an important writer. Her major books are -

Sense and Sensibility (1811)
Pride and Prejudice (1813)
Mansfield Park (1814)
Emma (1815)
Northanger Abbey (1818)
Persuasion (1818)

All of the above have have been dramatized as films and/or as television serials.

Jane never married, although in 1802 she turned down a proposal from a rich admirer. She lived quietly with her family, and in 1817, after a year of bad health (perhaps Addison's disease), she died and was buried in Winchester Cathedral.

The picture on this page is the only certain portrait of Jane, a coloured sketch done by her sister Cassandra.
