Dick is about as stereotypical ""09er" as one can get: he loves the ladies, the occasional trip to Tijuana, and just having fun.

During Dick's senior year, however, his own life seems to mirror that of his friend Logan Echolls---his father flees the country after being outed in a real estate scheme, and is left with his younger brother Cassidy to look after. His stepmother, Kendall, is a golddigger who is not only barely older than Dick himself but is carrying on an affair with Logan, Dick's best friend.

After the events of graduation and his brother's suicide play out, Dick tries to prove that they don't affect him---to no avail. He barely got into Hearst College (he only got in there thanks to some string-pulling), he managed to make a complete debauchery of himself on campus (thereby resulting in his being barred from on-campus housing), and became something of an alcoholic. Finally, Dick appears at Logan's door, in shambles, tearfully admitting that he has nowhere else to go. Logan agrees to take him in, and it's apparent that though Dick is back to his old cheerful self, ther eare still some issues he needs to work out.
