Rhodes was born in Winnipeg and is the son of drama critic-broadcaster-playwright Ann Henry. In 1957 he was an airman mechanic in the RCAP. He joined a newly formed drama group, and decided to leave the service for an acting career.
Rhodes' career as an actor has been internationally successful. He began as an apprentice actor and stage manager at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, and was a member of the first class at Montreal's National Theatre School.
He went on to the Stratford Shakespearian Festival and to appearances in numerous CBC-TV dramas, including "The Broken Sky," "Venus Observed," "David, Chapter Two," and "God's Sparrow."
He accepted a seven-year contract with Universal Pictures in Hollywood, California, but left Universal after two years. However, he remained in California and appeared in several films and numerous television programs.
