John Legend was born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio as John Stephans. When he was five, he started playing classical piano. At the age of six, he started singing with the church choir. Legend attended the University of Pennsylvania and majored in English. Legend was working as an independent artist when his roomate intorduced him to Kanye West. Legend and West worked together on West's album "The College Dropout" and Legend's first album "Get Lifted". Legend has also worked with Common. On the 2006 Grammys, Legend won best new artist, best R&B album, and best R&B vocal performance for "Ordinary People".
