John, Sam and Dean's father, is the reason that the brothers hunt and think the way they do. After the supernatural death of his wife, John took his two sons and set out to find the being that murdered his wife. During his boys' childhoods, he raised them to be skilled demon hunters, teaching them techniques and methods that he had discovered.

22 years after his wife's death, John disappeared, leaving coordinates for his sons to follow. Sam and Dean teamed up to find their father, and John soon comes to their aide in Kansas where he follows his boys but never reveals to him that he's near. John finally catches up to his sons in Chicago where Sam and Dean learn that Meg, a possessed demon, is after John. Together, John, Sam, and Dean retreive The Colt, a gun capable of killing any demon, and set off to kill the demon that murdered their mother instead.

But things don't go as they planned. John becomes possessed by the demon and Sam is forced to shoot him to get rid of the demon. As they leave together, a semi driven by a possessed man rams into their Impala. At the hospital, John makes a deal the The Demon in order to save his life -- John's life for Dean's. John was pronounced dead at 10:41AM.
