lan Holm Cuthbert was born in Gidea Park, Essex, in I931 and developed an early interest in acting. forming a dramatic society at Chigwell Grammar school In between terms at RADA he did the National Service (in the Army) and toured the USA for a year playing Peter Pan and Henry V. His British stage debut was as spear carrier in Othello at Stratford (1954, and Holm then remained with the Roy Shakespeare Company for thirteen years playing such leading roles as Henry IV, Henry V, Richard III and Romeo. He did not play a contemporary part until he appeared in Harold Pinter's The Homecoming in 1965, and his film debut was not until The Fixer in 1968. Subsequent films: The Bofors Gun, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Oh! What a Lovely War, A Severed Head, Nicholas and Alexandra, Mary Queen of Scots, Young Winston, The Homecoming, Juggernaut, Shout at the Devil, Robin and Marian, March or Die, The Thief of Baghdad and Alien. He also had roles in three movies Les Miserables, SOS Titanic and All Quiet on the Western Front. His major TV roles have been in The Sweeney, Jesus of Nazareth and The Man in the Iron Mask.
