Received his undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard. Never practiced law because he went straight into politics.
 
In 1974 was elected to the New York State Assembly at the age of 23. He was the youngest elected member of that body since Theodore Roosevelt.
 
Elected to the House of Representatives in 1980 replacing Elizabeth Holtzman.
 
Defeated former Congresswoman and Vice-Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro in the 1998 New York Democratic primary for the right to oppose then GOP Senator Alphonse D'Amato in the general election.
