Erudite, silver-haired stage and screen actor Otto Kruger while attending the University of Michigan and Columbia University, Kruger switched his field of interest from music to acting. After several seasons in regional theatre, the 30-year-old Kruger made his Broadway bow in The Natural Law in 1915. That same year, he appeared in his first films, but did not actively pursue moviemaking until the talkie era.
He had his first appearances in movies from 1915 in productions like "The Runaway Wife" (15), "A Mother's Confession" (15) and "When the Call Came" (15). Other silent movies were "Around the Clock with a Sailor" (18), "Under the Red Robe" (23) and "The Home Girl" (28).
But only in the 30's Otto Kruger's career took a visible shape and he took part in well-known productions with many stars of that time. He often impersonated dubios figures, tainted with negative traits.
To his popular movies of the 30's belong "The Prizefighter and the Lady" (33), "Gallant Lady" (33), "Paris Interlude" (34), "Treasure Island" (34), "Dracula's Daughter" (36), "They Won't Forget" (37), "Exposed" (38) and "Another Thin Man" (39).
He continued his career smoothly in the 40's and Otto Kruger was convincing in movies like "Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" (40), "The Big Boss" (41), "Saboteur" (42), "Tarzan's Desert Mystery" (43), "Storm Over Lisbon" (44), "Murder, My Sweet" (44), "Escape in the Fog" (45), "Duel in the Sun" (46) and "Lullu Belle" (48).
From the 50's the TV took over a more and more important role, also in the career of Otto Kruger.
To his numerous performances of the 50's and 60's belong "Valentino" (51), "High Noon" (52), "Black Widow" (54), "The Desert Song" (55), "The Young Philadelphians" (59), an episode of the serial "Perry Mason: The Case of the Grumbling Grandfather" (61), "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" (62), an episode of the serial "Dr. Kildare: Gravida One" (62) as well as an episode of the serial "Bonanza: Elegy for a Hangman" (63).
When Otto Kruger suffered several strokes in the middle of the 60's he retired from the film business.
His daughter Ottile Kruger became also an actress,and starred with her father on Broadway several times. He had 3 gerand daughters, Gaye, Darlene and Deborah Jean. His grand daughters, Gaye Kruger and actress/ director, and Deedee Rescher actress are still preforming. Otto Kruger's great-uncle Paul Kruger was no less a person than the former South African president who also was the eponym of the famous Krugerrand (gold coin).
