John Arthur Lithgow was born 19 October 1945 in Rochester, New York as the son of Sarah Jane Price and Arthur Lithgow.
John graduated from Princeton High School and attended Harvard from which he graduated magna cum laude. At Harvard he got a Fulbright scholarship which brought him to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
