Not only well known for his contributions building the modern DC Comics cartoon franchise, but also a famous cartoon series animator. Born in 1961, he was practically born with a pencil and pad in his mouth. Timm had no help in his art, but has cited influences from many artists including Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, Wally Wood, Alex Toth, Frank Frazetta, Dan DeCarlo, Jim Steranko, and John Buscema.

In 1981, Timm was given his first animation job with Filmation Studios as a layout artist for Blackstar. He joined Don Bluth Productions as an assistant animator for the feature film The Secret of NIMH in 1982. When that was finished, Timm returned to Filmation to work on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Timm joined Marvel Productions, doing character and prop designs for GI Joe in 1984.
