Katee Sackhoff is best known as Starbuck in the re-imagined
Battlestar Galactica series, but has had a fairly low-key career. Her first acting role was in the 1995 film
Mr Holland's Opus at just the age of 14, but she became bored with the experience, and left halfway through the first day.
Three years later, she would make her first credited role in Lifetime TV movie
Fifteen and Pregnant, appearing a year later in a pilot entitled
Locust Valley. The series had failed to be picked up, but in 2000 she landed a starring role in the series
The Fearing Mind. It was canceled in mid-season, but seemingly moving right along she would again both have a starring role and share screen-time with Richard Dreyfuss in the series
The Education of Max Bickford. The series was slightly more successful in that it stayed on air for its entire 22 episode season from 2001 to 2002, but was not brought back for a second season. From the show, Sackhoff learned from professionals on how to handle the world of acting. In the same year that series ended, she was among the cast in her most prolific role to that point in
Halloween: Resurrection, the latest entry in the popular but slowly dwindling
Halloween film series.
The very next year, Sackhoff would be featured in a radical re-imaging of the short-lived 1978 series
Battlestar Galactica. The miniseries was received well enough that the Sci-Fi Channel greenlit a series that began in 2004. Though the idea that Sackhoff would be filling in a role that had best known to audiences as a man was intially one of the aspects that raised skepticism with fans of the original series, the actress and her character have since been embraced along with the other elements of the new series. The series has given Katee a large audience to work for, providing her with more recognisable roles in projects.
In 2007, Katee took on the role of Sarah Corvus in another re-imagining, this time the Bionic Woman (from
Battlestar Galactica producer David Eick). Taken when
Galactica's fate was up in the air, Katee's place in the show has been highly acclaimed as a highlight admist the fairly uneven reviews of the show itself. In March of 2008, Eick announced that the series had been canceled. The same month production resumed on the last half of
Galactica's final season.
Sackhoff is aiming for a bright future, but understands the nature of the beast and prepared to play like-minded bad-ass women for a while, perfectly content with living out her career as a character actor.
David Eick says of Sackhoff "She's a very special find. Those actors who can combine qualities of strength and vulnerability - they usually call those people movie stars."
