played Johnny McKay, Deputy in Lawman

Johnny McKay was raised on farm outside Lawrence, Kansas where his father was killed by raiders during the Civil War. When he was about 10 years old, Johnny and his mother joined a wagon train west. His mother died and was buried by the trail in Nebraska. An orphan, Johnny was raised from the age of ten by "Uncle" Jess Miller,

When the story opens, Johnny is 18 and works in a Laramie cafe operated by Dru Lemp, the widow of Laramie's former Marshal David Lemp. In the premier episode ("The Deputy" 1x01) Johnny becomes Marshal Troop's deputy after saving the Marshal's life in an unfair gunfight initiated by the murderous Hawks brothers.

Johnny enjoys a father-son/mentor-protege relationship with Marshal Troop. Johnny is young, intelligent, and brave. He takes his job as deputy seriously but has a sense of humor and is capable of enjoying some lighthearted moments. He develops strong, loyal, and caring relationships with others. McKay wants nothing so much as to be a lawman in the Dan Troop mold.
