In 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page decided he wanted to quit his tenure as a session guitarist and start his own band. He asked his friend John Paul Jones to play bass in his new project, and the pair began looking for a vocalist. They found a young amateur named Robert Plant whom they recruited right away. Plant then recommended his friend John Bonham to play drums, and the band was formed. Keith Moon, drummer for The Who, predicted that Page's band would "go over like a lead zeppelin," Page liked it, and the band now had a name. Needless to say, Moon was wrong and Led Zeppelin released its self titled debut album in January of 1969. The album was an instant hit and the band zoomed into superstardom beginning a period of 12 straight years in which Led Zeppelin owned rock music. Zeppelin's highly original blended sound of blues, folk, and funk is unrivaled and has never been recreated although thousands have tried.

John Bonham: Drumming was the only thing I was ever good at.
Jimmy Page: I don't think the critics could understand what we were doing.
Jimmy Page: I always believed in the music we did and that's why it was uncompromising.
Robert Plant: I realized what Led Zeppelin was about around the end of our first U.S. tour. We started off not even on the bill in Denver, and by the time we got to New York we were second to Iron Butterfly, and they didn't want to go on!
