Phantom Planet was formed in 1994 in Southern California, consisting of Alex Greenwald, Sam Farrar, Darren Robinson, Jason Schwartzman, and Jacques Brautbar. They released their first album in 1997, but their popularity didn't soar until the release of their sophomore album,
The Guest, in 2002. With the release of their third album, Phantom Planet changed their sound from pop-rock to garage rock. However, before the release of the album, drummer Jason Schwartzman left the band, and was replaced by Jeff Conrad. After the release of
Phantom Planet in 2004, guitarist Jacques Brautbar also left the band. The band plans to release their fourth album in the summer of 2007.
The band's most popular single, "California", was used as the theme song to the popular FOX drama,
The OC.
