Tygo Gernandt is born on Sunday April 7th, 1974 in the centre of "De Jordaan" in Amsterdam. At an early age he moved with his father Arthur, mother Manja and his big brother Ilja to the south of Amsterdam. At age 4 he started acting, he said. At age 5 Tygo started at the Youth acting school "De Krakeling", where he performed on Wednesdays and Fridays.
At age 12 he had his first appearance on television, where he acts in a promotional clip to get The Olympics to The Netherlands. In 1987 Tygo went to the Television school of "Stichting Cervelaat". Here he follows 4 years of acting classes given by various directors and actors.
After finishing high school and the Television school, Tygo applies for the Pabo (Pedagogical academy for the primary education). At the same moment acting assignments are offered. His part in the series Fort Alpha provides him a stepping stone in the television world. His guest roles in "Goeden tijden, slechte tijden", "12 steden, 13 ongelukken" and "Oppassen!!!" provide the rest.
In 1996 Tygo gets his first main role in the Dutch movie "Naar de klote!" by Ian Kerkhof, about drugs use and partying. After the movie, he starts the second season of "Fort Alpha". Meanwhile he stars in several guest roles of tv series and movies. In 1998 he plays a role in the serie "Combat", about The Royal Dutch Army. After 2 seasons as host (and creator) of the program "Read My Lips", Tygo is asked to play a part in the sitcom "De Garage"
Tygo is gets well known, and infamous by playing the main character criminal Maikel Verheije in the movie "Van God Los" (Godforsaken). During the Dutch film festival in 2003, he is choosen as best actor for this part and wins a "Golden Calf".
In 2004 he gets the part of bodyguard in the movie "De Dominee", based on the life of drug lord Klaas Bruinsma. A year later he gets a part in the thriller "Joyride" with fellow actress Georgina Verbaan, this movie flops big time.
A big hit is the movie "Het Schnitzelparadijs" by Martin Koolhoven. His support acting, as dangerous looking chef, again delivers him a "Golden Calf". Disappointing enough he has to share this award with 4 fellow actors.
In 2006 Tygo is playing a part in the last by the deceased director Willem van de Sande Bakhuyzen directed movie "Ik omhels je met 1000 armen".
In 2008 he will star again as Goran, the dangerous looking chef from the movie "Het Schnitzelparadijs" in the spin-off series "Het Schnitzelparadijs".
