Jay Manuel may be noticed for that silver hair and fashion expertise, but before he even entered the fashion world Manuel had other hopes and dreams. Originally, Manuel never thought he’d be in the fashion and beauty industry, as he had aspirations to become a medical professional. Born to a kidney specialist father, and a teacher mother, Manuel had his eyes set on the sciences, and was even accepted to the University of Toronto. Despite his medical dreams, Manuel had an immense love for opera. In between studying, Manuel flew to New York every month for opera training and coaching with the assistant conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. Manuel still held a deep passion for medicine, but felt a strong pull toward the arts. What really flipped the switch for Manuel was a publicity shoot for Martin Scorsese's “The Age of Innocence.” Manuel helped out by doing his opera teacher’s makeup. His work impressed the entire team and, before he knew it, Manuel left medicine and opera behind him. He was now a part of the fashion and beauty world. Manuel’s very first celebrity fashion gig was for a Luciano Pavarotti CD cover. Ever since then, his career has skyrocketed. He is most popular for being a judge and creative consultant on The CW’s “America’s Next Top Model,” alongside Tyra Banks. For 18 seasons he served on the show, but unfortunately was fired in 2012. He’s also been a part of several other fashion series like “Canada’s Next Top Model” and the Style Network’s makeover series, “Style Her Famous.” That’s not all; from time to time, Manuel can be spotted on the red carpet as a fashion expert for some of the top award shows including the Emmys, Grammys, SAG Awards, Golden Globes and Academy Awards. If that’s not enough, he’s also the host of Yahoo’s premiere fashion and beauty lifestyle program The Thread. In 2009, Manuel also gave others a little taste of his style with the launch of a contemporary women’s clothing line called Attitude at Sears Canada. When he’s not participating in the fashion world, Manuel is busy giving back to others. He’s a Smile Ambassador for Operation Smile and a huge supporter of the GLAAD Media Awards, AIDS research and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. For more than a decade, he’s been making a name for himself in the fashion and beauty world.
