Jonathan Gregory Brandis was born April 13, 1976 to Mary and Gregory Brandis. His middle name is his father's first name. At the young age of 6 he got a recurring role in the American soap opera, One Life To Live, and appeared in various commercials. He left his birth place of Danbury, Connecticut to move to Los Angeles, California and by the age of 9 had appeared in shows such as Murder, She Wrote, L.A. Law and Kate and Allie. Jonathan got his first starring role in the sequel to The NeverEnding Story, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter where he played the main character of Bastian Bux. This was in 1990 at the young age of 14.
After this he made primarily TV appearances in various shows and also starred in movies. Of his TV appearances he is probably most famous for his role in seaQuest DSV (1993-1996), Steven Spielberg's futuristic science fiction show, as Lucas Wolenczak. After the movie The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, Jonathan was in numerous movies such as Ladybugs (1992 - also starring Rodney Dangerfield), Sidekicks (1992 - alongside Chuck Norris) and Hart's War (2002). In 1987 he had a small part in Fatal Attraction and was also in Stephen King's It.
On November 11, 2003 at about 23:40 a friend of Jonathan's found him hanging by a nylon rope in the hallway of his apartment complex at 650 South Detroit Street. He was cut down and efforts to revive him proved futile as he died the next day, his death was announced by hospital staff at about 14:45. No suicide note was left and his family members and friends were all hurt by his death. He had quit smoking two years previously, drank socially and had no known previous suicide attempts. Friends commented that he was lonely and depressed about his career and had even joked about killing himself. His mother, Mary, had speculated that Accutane, a drug he had been taking for acne, may have resulted in his death due the alleged side effects being psychosis and increased risk for suicide. His role in Hart's War, which he hoped might revive his lagging career, was edited out and he was reported to have been quite upset by this.

Jonathan Brandis Quotes |

Teen magazines keep writing that my eyes 'twinkle' when I talk. Look, I'm a guy. I don't twinkle, you know! You can say that my eyes 'sparkle' maybe, but not 'twinkle' alright? Got that teen magazine writers?! | I want to direct, I want to be part of something creative, something with quality. My biggest fear as an actor is being involved in something mediocre, or being mediocre myself. I've taken classes on screen-writing and, of course, I read a lot of scripts. Writing is what I'd really like to move towards. Right now, though, it just doesn't pay the mortgage. | My friends would probably describe me as silly. And honest. And that I think about things a bit too much. |
