played Inspector Raymond Fowler in The Thin Blue Line
Fearless leader and fountain of knowledge & wisdom, Inspector Fowler is the pillar of strength upon which the station relies. Similar to Goody, he is a slight paradox, only in a different sense: he’s both conservative and socially tolerant. Raymond cannot and will not accept irresponsible behaviour; however, he is very socially conscious and accepting of the rights of others, such as political correctness. Both racial slurs and euphemisms – as well as his pet peeve, acronyms – are unacceptable to him, and in his opinion, both point to a decaying society.
His stodginess is magnified by two characters: Habib and Dawkins. The former is a hip, new, and clever woman who can understand modern phenomena, such as drug culture, and often reminds Fowler of how behind the times he is. The latter, Dawkins, is his long-term girlfriend; her disregard for the line between their private life and their work life, i.e. being too familiar at work, is something that makes Raymond more than a little embarrassed. Lastly, as an intelligent and thoughtful leader, he contrasts sharply with the brash and mindless leadership of Grim of CID. The two leaders often have opposing views, yet, nearly every time Fowler proves to be correct. |
