Bob Newhart and his wife Ginny (Virginia Quinn) are unlikely best friends with insult comedian Don Rickles and his far more charming wife Barbara. They've taken a number of cruises and traveled the world with one another.
 
Before his success in show business, Bob was an accountant in Chicago, Illinois. He hated the accounting profession, but it provided him a wealth of material for his early stand-up routines.
 
During his television sit-com career, Bob insisted that his character not have any children. He did not want his role to be reduced to being the dumb Dad. Towards the end of the Bob Newhart show in the 1970s a script was presented to him in which his wife, Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) became pregnant. Bob's reaction was "This is a great script! It's really, really hilarious. It's fabulous!" The writers and the producers were quite elated until Bob said, "Uh, but who are you going to get to play Bob?" That story line never saw the light of day.
