Candice Bergen was born on May 9, 1946 in Beverly Hills, California. Her father is Edgar Bergen, a famous ventriloquist, and her mother is Frances Bergen, actress and "Chesterfield Girl". At age 6, Bergen made her show-biz debut on her father's radio show. She attended the prestigious Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles, and the Cathedral School in Washington D.C., then went abroad to the Montesano School in Switzerland. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied art history and creative drawing, but did not graduate.
Bergen worked as a model at the Ford Agency, and starred in many films early in her career, such as
Carnal Knowledge (1971) and
The Wind and the Lion (1975), while also frequently working as a photographer and photojournalist. She was the first female guest host of
Saturday Night Live in 1975, and has hosted the show several times since then.
In 1980, Bergen married French director Louis Malle, and together they had one daughter, Chloe, in 1985. They were married until Malle died of cancer in 1995. Bergen became the star of the sitcom
Murphy Brown (1988), for which she won five Emmys and two Golden Globe awards. Her more recent movie credits include
Miss Congeniality (2000),
Sweet Home Alabama, but her most notable role of late is the character of Shirley Schmidt, on the hit show,
Boston Legal (2004).
Bergen is currently married to her second husband, Marshall Rose, a Manhattan real estate developer.
