James was born on Feb. 7th, 1960 in Boston Mass. to Todd and Jean Spader. He attended and subsequently dropped out of Phillips Academy in the 11th grade to pursue an acting career in New York. He married his wife, Victoria, in 1987 and had two children with her. James is most known for his roles in 'Pretty in Pink' and 'Less than Zero' in the mid 80's. From which he became part of group of successful young actors known as The Brat Pack.

He declined to reprise his "Stargate" role, Dr. Daniel Jackson, in the spin-off series "Stargate SG-1". He was succeeded in the role by Michael Shanks.
 
Has won two emmys. First was for playing the role of Alan Shore in ABC's The Practice, and the second for playing the same character in the spin-off series Boston Legal. He thus became one of the few actors to win an emmy for playing the same character in an original series and a spin-off series.
 
He was married to Victoria Spader from 1987 until their divorce in 2004.
 
He is a fan of Bob Dylan and great admirer of Charles Laughton.
