James Spader

James Spader was born in Boston, Massachusetts, as James Todd Spader, on February 7, 1960. Both of his parents were teachers, and made sure he was getting a solid education. They sent him to the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass, until he dropped out and moved to New York to become an actor. While in New York, he did odd jobs to support himself, and to pay for his training at the Michael Chekhov Acting Studio.
Spader has always been open about his motivation for his roles: money. Even so, his films have carried themes through the decades. In the eighties, he was cast as the sleazy, villainous type in films like ’Pretty in Pink’ and ’Less than Zero’. Through the nineties, his roles turned more sexually oriented. ’Sex Lies and Videotape’ earned him a Best Actor award, followed by others like ’Crash’ and ‘Secretary’. The Turn of the century brought him into the dramatic world of the court system. One character, Alan Shore, won him three Emmys across two different shows, ’The Practice’ and ’Boston Legal’. In 2013, he took the role as ‘Red’ Reddington, on The Blacklist. The show uses the culmination of traits that he’s developed over his career to put together a very meticulously calculated, sadistic villain with an underlying “something” that makes you wonder.

James Spader Quotes
If I don't need the money, I don't work. I'm going to spend time with my family and friends, and I'm going to travel and read and listen to music and try to learn a little bit more about how to be a human being, as opposed to learning how to be somebody else.

Sometimes with people their work is the most important thing to them, and sometimes the work enables you to do other things that are more important to you. I probably am closer to that.
