Emerson Cod is a private investigator who discovered Ned's secret while chasing after a suspect that died, was brought back to life, and killed again. He and Ned work together to collect rewards offered for information in murder investigations by asking the victims who killed them using Ned's ability.
Emerson is a knitting enthusiast and has a strong interest in pop-up books. Possessed of a sardonic wit and a keen intellect, he’s capable of solving crimes even without Ned’s assistance: it just takes a little longer. Whether it’s feigned or real, Emerson’s driving interest seems to be money. He talks of it often and promotes himself shamelessly to get new clients.
Despite his gruffness, he’s protective of Ned and doesn’t believe anything good will come of his relationship with “Dead Girl” (Chuck). He’s as cynical as Chuck is open-hearted, and the two work well together despite their differences.
