played Rob Laird in Drive

Army Soldier Rob thought he was on leave when he started The Race - he was wrong. Unbeknownst to him, his unit had shipped back to Iraq, and he was now AWOL - a fact his wife Ellie was intentionally keeping from him.

When he started The Race, Rob was keen to use his military service and experience to call in favours from various sources (Air Force personnel, patriotic truckers) in order to get ahead. Ironically, it wasn't until he saw a news report on the Iraq War that he began to twig that something might be wrong - true enough, when he finally found a landline to call his commanding officer, he was told of his AWOL status, and that if he did come back he'd face a court martial and charges. Enraged, Rob realised what Ellie had done to him, and confronted his wife - explaining to her that the maximum penalty for going AWOL is death, and now going back could very well lead to his execution.
