A graduate of Huntington High School in Huntington, West Virginia and Marshall University which was interrupted by WWII when he joined the Navy and would entertain his ship mates by telling jokes and stories over the intercom. After the war ended he would return to Marshall University, and soon after graduating Sales' began his entertainment career as a script writer and then DJ at radio station WHTN in Huntington. Soupy's unusual nickname came from his family. His older brothers were nicknamed "Hambone" and "Chicken Bone"; so Milton was called "Soup Bone", which he later shortened to "Soupy".As a disc jockey he used the stage name "Soupy Hines". The name sounded too much like Heinz, which was a brand name food company so Soupy went back to his surname of Sales.
Soupy's first TV job was the host of a teen dance sho
w called
Soupy's Soda Shop, which originated in Cincinnati. He soon had another program called
Club Nothing!, a comedy/variety show. Once canceled Sales would move to Cleveland, where he created another comedy/variety program called
Soupy's On!...a take on his Cincinnati show and this would be where he took his first pie in the face, a later trade mark of his. Soupy's best known show was originally called
12 O'clock Comics, a children's program and later was changed to
The Soupy Sales Show. This is not only where he would find fame, but also the low point of his career. Once on New Years Day, Soupy told his young viewers to go in their parents wallets and send him those funny looking green pieces of paper and in return he will send them back a postcard from Puerto Rico. This resulted in a suspension. Urban legends also claim that Soupy would slip in adult jokes over the air waves. Since the end of this program, Sales has appeared as a guest on a number of game shows.
