Something of a national treasure, Wendy Craig returns in The Royal (7pm, ITV1).
Wendy knew when she saw her first pantomime as a child that she wanted to act - looking back, she describes her younger self as a bit of a drama queen. But it took years of slogging away with small stage and screen roles before she found herself getting her big break...
That finally came in 1963, in British film The Servant, alongside Dirk Bogarde and Sarah Miles, while 1980s The Nanny (which she both co-wrote and starred in) saw her performing opposite screen legend Bette Davis. She rounded off the decade with hit series Not In Front Of The Children, for which she won a Bafta.
Wendy's heyday came in the 1970s, with shows such as And Mother Makes Three, And Mother Makes Five, and Carla Lane's classic comedy Butterflies - which actually ran until 1983. More comedy - her forte - was to follow, with Laura And Disorder (which she also co-wrote) in 1989 and Brighton Belles (the British version of The Golden Girls) in 1993. In the 1980s, she also branched out into publishing, with her successful Busy Mum's cookbook - the real Wendy is clearly a far cry from her chaotic character, Ria, in Butterflies!
Now a youthful-looking 76, with regular roles in The Royal and the updated series of Reggie Perrin, Wendy has found a new lease of life.
