The central character in the Vietnamese war drama China Beach was Nurse Colleen McMurphy. McMurphy was a very complex individual. She could be tough as nails when the situation called for it but kind and compassionate when caring for her charges. McMurphy suffered her own demons brought on by the stress of the war. She began drinking heavily and eventually sank into alcoholism. It was nearly twenty years after she left the China Beach base that McMurphy finally found a measure of peace. |
