He was born in LA but grew up in Reno.
Joe was Stanley Kowalski in a school production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" in a school play.
After graduating from college Flanigan worked at a variety of jobs, from banking to politics. He was never completely comfortable in any of theese jobs. After he got fired from the Interview magazine, he was broke, and lived in New York City. His nextdoor neighbour was an actor, and he convinced Joe to give it a try. He then studied acting at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse.
He guest starred in many Tv show such as Judging Amy, Murphy Brown and Dawson’s Creek before he was invited in 2004 to be John Sheppard in the sci-fi show Stargate Atlantis (role is currently on).

Trivia
When Joe Flanigan was shooting Stargate Atlantis's pilot - Rising, he tripped and fell down a hill, while shooting. However the editors liked it and kept it in the episode.
His favorite episode of Stargate Atlantis, season one, was The Defiant One.
He won two prizes at the Waterkeepers' Alliance event in Lake Louise in January 2006 (skying event).
He and his wife have three sons (Aidan, Truman and Fergus).
