Terry Kinney was born on January 29, 1954 in Lincoln, Illinois. He attended Illinois State University, where he met actors Jeff Perry and Gary Sinise. Kinney, Sinise, and Perry founded The Steppenwolf Theater, their own Chicago theatrical troupe, in 1973.

Kinney’s movie debut was in 1986, with a small role in the film Seven Minutes in Heaven. He also had a recurring role on the TV series, thirtysomething. Lately, he is most recognized for playing character Tim McManus on HBO's prison drama Oz.

He was married to actress Elizabeth Perkins, with whom he has one daughter, but they are now divorced. He is currently married to Kathryn Erbe (his co-star on Oz) and with whom he has a daughter, named Maeve, and a son, named Carson.
