Andrew Samuel 'Andy' Griffith was born to Carl and Geneva Griffith on June 1, 1926 in Mount Airy, North Carolina. He is best known for his role on The Andy Griffth Show where he played Sheriff Andy Taylor, alongside comedian Don Knotts, which aired for 8 seasons. He later went on to play Ben Matlock on Matlock. He's been married three times, and fathered three children, all whom he adopted. In the industry for 50 years, Griffith has earned himself a Grammy award (in 1997), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (located on 6420 Hollywood Blvd.), and even has a statue in both his hometown of Mount Airy, and in Raleigh- North Carolina's capital city.
He adopted three children- Andrew Jr., Dixie, and Nancy. He was born on the same exact day as Marilyn Monroe. Was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome in 1983, but eventually recovered. His son Andy, Jr. died of alcoholism in 1996 at the age of 39. Griffith received the Presidential Medal of Freedom on November 9, 2005. In May 2000, he underwent a quadruple heart bypass surgery, and almost died. He recovered after the bypass was successful. In September 2006, he had hip surgery. His father Carl was a furniture factory worker, and his mother Geneva was a homemaker. He was married to his first wife, Barbara Edwards from 1949, until they divorced in 1972.
