Brian Kelly was born February 14, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to Harry F. Kelly and Anne O'Brien Kelly. Brian had two brothers and two sisters, one brother being his twin.

Kelly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He subsequently attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated in 1953 and then studied law for a year at the University of Michigan. During his college days, Kelly modelled and acted in radio and tv commercials in Detroit.

Kelly headed to Hollywood in the late fifties after choosing acting as his career. Following minor roles in Adventures in Paradise, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Rifleman, Kelly starred in two short-lived tv series, 21 Beacon Street, (1969) a crime drama, and Straightaway (1961), a show about car racing.

Kelly's big break came in 1964 when he was chosen to play Porter Ricks, Chief Warden at Coral Key Park and Marine Preserve in the family-oriented action and adventure tv series Flipper. Although taking a back

Kelly's father Harry F. Kelly served as Michigan governor (1944-1947) and also as justice on the Michigan Supreme Court.
 
Kelly was awarded $750,000 in the settlement case that followed his motorcycle accident.
 
Kelly had been cast (and apparently approved by author Jacqueline Susann) for the lead in 1971's The Love Machine. Kelly's motorcycle accident forced him from the role however and the part went to John Phillip Law.
 
Kelly was the uncle of actor Brian d'Arcy James.

Actor Brian Kelly, who starred as Porter Ricks in the popular 1960s’ NBC television series “Flipper,” has died. He was 73. Kelly died last Saturday of pneumonia in Voorhees, N.J., according to a family friend. Kelly was born Feb. 14, 1931, in Detroit, son of former Gov. Harry F. Kelly, who was later chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. He began his acting career after serving in the Marines during the Korean War and attending University of Michigan law school for a year. After a number of guest appearances on “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “The Rifleman” and other shows, he was cast as the father of two boys in “Flipper,” which also starred a porpoise as the title character. The series was filmed in Miami and in Nassau, the Bahamas. In interviews at the time, Kelly said he cherished the role because it portrayed “a parent who gives his kids principles and talks to them about the real values in life.” In 1966, he appeared in the underwater film, “Around the World Under the Sea.” In 1970, Kelly was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident that left his right arm and leg paralyzed. He later won a legal settlement and continued working in Hollywood, including serving as an executive producer on Ridley Scott’s 1982 film, “Blade Runner.”
