Courteney Bass Cox was born on June 15, 1964 to father Richard L and Courteney Cox. Courtney was their youngest child and has 2 older sisters, named Virginia and Dottie, and one older brother named Richard Jr. She was raised in Mountain Brook, Alabama.
Courteney attended Mountain Brook High School in Alabama. She was a cheerleader, but also played tennis and participated in swimming. During her senior year, Courteney got her first modelleling gig in an advertisement for a store called Parisians. Courteney studied architecture and interior design at Mount Vernon College for one year, but then dropped out to pursue a modelling career in New York, where she was signed by the Ford Modelling Agency. She got work as a cover girl on teen magazines, and soon did commercials for Maybeline, Noxema, Tampax, and the New York Telephone Company.
Courteney took acting classes, and was given a small part in an episode of "As the World Turns" in 1984. Soon after she was cast in the Bruce Springsteen video "Dancing in The Dark" which made her face well-known. In 1985 she got a role starring with Dean Paul Martin in "Misfits of Science". A few years later she was chosen to play Michael J. Fox's girlfriend, Lauren Miller, in the sitcom "Family Ties".
When Family Ties ended in 1989, and Cox did a few minor movies, such as Mr. Destiny (1990) with Michael Caine. In 1994, she starred with Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and in the next year was cast as Monica Geller on the sitcom "Friends", which made her famous.
In 1996 Cox starred in Wes Craven's Scream. Cox won rave reviews as TV reporter Gale Weathers. She continued this role for the other two movies in The Scream Trilogy. She met actor David Arquette while filming these, and the wed on June 12th, 1999.
