At the age of 7, Patrick began taking dancing lessons until he was kicked out for flirting and being a disruption. By 15, Patrick had made up a routine and toured the New England Vaudeville Circuit as a magician, comedian, and unicyclist, as well as a juggler and won third place in a National Juggling Competition.
Patrick's big break came in1981 when he won a Talent America Contest. A talent agency saw his potential and had him audition for the role of David in a stage production of Torch Song Trilogy. Patrick went on to act in several other plays including On Golden Pond and Brighton Beach Memoirs in which he starred.
His talent and determination continued to pay off and in 1985, Patrick made his big screen debut in the movie Heaven Help Us. By 1987, Dempsey had achieved major star status with his role in Can't Buy Me Love. Though the movie led to wide exposure and launched him into "teen idol" status, his moment in the spotlight was short-lived. Mobsters, JFK: Reckless Youth, With Honors, and Outbreak, the movies in which Dempsey starred during the early 1990s were box office bombs, and it wasn't until he acted in Scream 3 in 2000 that he was thrust back into the spotlight. Recently, Dempsey acted in the movie Sweet Home Alabama alongside Reese Witherspoon and will star in upcoming 2007 movies Freedom Writers and Enchanted.
During his years in the acting business, Dempsey also made several television guest appearances including Will and Grace, The Practice, and Once and Again.
Dempsey currently stars as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the hit ABC show Grey's Anatomy.
