Kate Walsh was born on October 13, 1967 in San Jose, California. She first got involved with acting at the University of Arizona where she studied regional theater. After graduating from college, Kate moved to Chicago where she became a part of the Piven Theatre Workshop and Chicago Shakespeare Repertory. Kate soon moved to New York to be a part of the comedy troupe "Burn Manhattan".

Kate's first television appearance came in 1994 when she guest starred in the medical drama ER. She landed her first major role in 1997 when she was as a recurring guest star, Nicki Fifer, on The Drew Carey Show. From there, Kate went on to star in The Mind of the Married Man, and guest star in several TV shows, including Eyes, Karen Sisco and CSI.

Kate currently stars on the ABC series Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Addison Montgomery Shepherd.
