Hornblower joined the Navy when he was seventeen. He did not have any relatives of high military or societal rank, so any appointments or promotions would rely strictly on his own performance. Although a late starter, he possessed an inate ability for navigation which quickly set him apart from the crowd.
The character was the model for other literary, TV and movie characters. Gene Rodenberry said that Horatio Hornblower was the inspiration for the character of Captain Kirk. |
