Joe was brought up in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England. He is the son of Jim McElderry and and Eileen Joyce who separated when Joe was still very young. Joe was brought up by his mother with the help of his grandmother, Hilda. Joe was educated at the Harton Technology College in South Shields and then went on to study at the South Tyneside College and Newcastle College.
Joe auditioned for X Factor in 2007, where after making it to boot camp decided to leave the competition as he thought he was too young. He re auditioned in 2009 and went on to be crowned series champion.
Joe had a number one hit with the charity song 'You Are Not Alone' along side the other X Factor finalists. His debut single 'The Climb' was released straight after the X Factor final. The single debuted at number 2 in the UK charts following a Facebook campaign to stop The X Factor winner from having the Christmas number one for the fifth successive year. The song did make it the number one spot the following week though making Joe's version of 'The Climb' the final number one hit of the decade.
Joe's debut album 'Wide Awake' reached number 3 in the UK album charts. In 2011, Joe parted company with his record label, Syco. He went on to appear on the television series Popstar To Operastar and won the series gaining more public votes each week then the rest of the other celebrities put together. Following the conclusion of the series it was announced that Universal record label Decca had signed Joe. Joe's second album 'Classic' entered the UK album charts at number 2.
In 2014, Joe took part in the Channel 4 reality series The Jump. The show featured celebrities taking part in different winter sports with Joe being crowned the series champion.
