Joe was brought up in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England. He is the son of Jim McElderry and and Eileen Joyce who separated when Joe was still very young. Joe was brought up by his mother with the help of his grandmother, Hilda. Joe was educated at the Harton Technology College in South Shields and then went on to study at the South Tyneside College and Newcastle College.

Joe auditioned for X Factor in 2007, where after making it to boot camp decided to leave the competition as he thought he was too young. He re auditioned in 2009 and went on to be crowned series champion.

Joe had a number one hit with the charity song 'You Are Not Alone' along side the other X Factor finalists. His debut single 'The Climb' was released straight after the X Factor final.
