Peter Graves was born Peter Aurness on March 18, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents are Rolf Cirkler Aurness and Ruth Duesler, and his brother is actor James Aurness (of Gunsmoke fame). He went to Southwest High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and graduated in 1944. While in school, he enjoyed both sports and music, and even worked as a radio announcer at WMIN in Minneapolis. After high school, Graves joined the Air Force, then attended the University of Minnesota where he studied drama and joined the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
After college, Graves moved to Hollywood where he has worked steadily in television and films. Some of his famous films include Stalag 17 (1953), The Five Man Army (1969), and Airplane! (1980).
Graves married his wife Joan Endress in 1950. They have three daughters, named Kelly, Claudia and Amanda.
