Thomas William Selleck was born on January 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. His father, Robert, is Serbian, and his mother, Martha, is Scottish-American. He was raised in Los Angeles, California. He got a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California, majoring in business administration. He got modeling jobs, and a drama coach persuaded him to try acting. In his senior year he appeared as a contestant on "The Dating Game" and got cast in a few television commercials, and his show business career was born.
Selleck started out in smaller roles, and soon had a recurring role on the show, The Rockford Files
. He was cast in six separate television pilots, but all of them failed. He finally hit success with his role in Magnum, P.I.
Steven Spielberg wanted him to play the starring role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark
(1981), but since he was under contract for Magnum, P.I.
, he had to turn down the movie role. Besides Magnum
, he has starred in a number of films, such as Three Men and a Baby
(1987), many made-for-TV movies, and guest spots on other shows, notably Friends
, and Boston Legal
Selleck married model Jacqueline Ray in 1970, and adopted her son from a previous marriage, but they were divorced in 1982. He later married actress Jillie Mack
in 1987, and they have a daughter, Hannah Selleck. The couple has homes in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Jonesboro, Maine.
