Earl was a guy who did bad stuff - beat people up, stole from them, lied... and then he won the lottery. Only soon after, he got hit by a car, and was confined to a hospital bed. It was there that he saw Carson Daly talking about "Karma" - how what goes around, comes around. Earl took that message to heart, and decided to change. He thinks if he can correct every little thing he's done wrong in his life, he'll have a better life. So he's written down all his mistakes on a list, and he's checking things off one by one.
Earl was married to Joy, but she divorced him while he was in the hospital. Neither of the two children she gave birth to during their marriage are biologically his.
