Kirsty moved to Summer Bay in 2000 with her mum and dad Shelly and Rhys and sisters Dani and Jade they moved into the caravan park. Kirsty went out with both Nick Smith and Seb Miller but when Kirsty started seeing Kane Phillips, the man who raped her sister Dani, her family fell apart but Kane soon left and Kirsty fell for the new boy in town Dylan Russell, but she and her family were in for a bigger shock when it was revealed that Dylan was Rhys' son. Kane later returned and he and Kirsty ran away together and got married, but later returned to the bay and the Sutherlands decided to bury the hatchett with Kane for Kirsty's sake. Kirsty and her family found out that she and her twin sister Jade were not really twins and there was a mix up at the hospital when the girls were born, Kirsty's identical twin sister was Laura DeGroot. Kirsty had a miscarriage and later found out she was pregnant again. Kirsty and Kane left the bay in 2005 to go on the run because Kane was accused of a robbery that his father comitted. They returned again in 2008 to ask Irene to take care of their sick son Ollie, Kane was soon arrested and the charges against Kirsty were dropped. Kirsty got together with Miles Copeland and when Kane was released from prison he tried to win Kirsty back but she stayed with Miles.
