A formidable Obie-winning stage player, he co-founded "The Negro Ensemble Company" in the 60s and also took advantage of 'Joe Papp' 's non-traditional casting of Shakespearean roles, such as "Measure for Measure", "Titus Andronicus", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Othello". Was nominated for Broadway's 1976 Tony Award as Best Actor (Play) for "The Poison Tree."
