Clyde was born to a theatrical family on March 25, 1892 in Blairgowrie, Scotland. He emigrated to America in the twenties, performed in vaudeville, then moved to Hollywood in the thirties to pursue a film career. He performed as an extra at Mack Sennett Studios and worked his way up to playing featured sidekick roles to the major stars. He had a series of comedy shorts at Educational Pictures in the mid-thirties and made his own series of comedy shorts at Columbia Pictures over a 20 year period. He was the comedy-relief sidekick in many low budget westerns and was often paired with William Boyd in the "Hopalong Cassidy" series as California Carson or with Whip Wilson at Monogram Pictures.
His film credits include: A Small Town Idol (silent, 1921), Million Dollar Legs (1932), Annie Oakley (1935), Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940), The Green Years (1946), Abilene Trail (1951), and Pardon My Nightshirt (1956), his last film.
His television credits include: No Time For Sergeants (1964-65) as Grandpa Jim Anderson; The Real McCoys (1957-63) as George MacMichael, and Lassie (1959-64) as Cully Wilson.
He died on May 18, 1967, aged 75 of natural causes in Los Angeles, California.
