Gwen Watford was born on the 10th September, 1927 in London and died on the 6th February, 1994 in London from cancer.
Gwen Watford was primarily a stage actress. Married to the actor Richard Bebb, his stage work continued at the same time; both appeared in plays together at the Theatre Royal, Windsor, and the Belgrade, Coventry. “The greatest pleasure of my life was to see her [Watford] in one of her plays 20 or 30 times and help her to polish it to perfection. My only aim was to make our acting better, and we were fiercely critical of each other in the most loving way,” he said. “I miss the total honesty we had with each other.
“My wife never understood that to have a passionate collector as a husband guarantees faithfulness. Everything I know and love is in London: Lord’s, Arsenal, art galleries, the Garrick. But Gwen loved the country. She got cottage-itis. Luckily I was left some money in a will and was able to buy her one in Warwickshire.”
She was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1982 (1981 season) for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in
Present Laughter.
On television she is perhaps best known for her supporting role in the 'Miss Marple' series, playing Dolly Bantry opposite Joan Hickson as Miss Marple.
When she died she left two sons, and her husband Richard Bebb, who died on 12th April, 2006.
