Gerard was the narrator in the BBC Radio version of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," and has directed & acted in many other radio plays for BBC Radio.
 
At the Old Vic in Bristol, Gerard is the only actor to play both Hal and Falstaff in the Shakespearean play Henry IV since Ralph Richardson in 1962. (Murphy played Hal 19 years ago for the RSC).
 
Gerard's information is frequently mixed up on various websites with an American actor also named Gerard Murphy. The fact of the matter is Gerard never appeared in an American film until his role in the 1995 Costner bomb Waterworld.
