Gillian Leigh Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 9, 1968 to Edward and Rosemary Anderson. Soon after her birth, her family relocated to Puerto Rico for 15 months and then moved to England. Gillian spent the next 9 years of her childhood growing up in London's North End - first in Stamford Hill, then in Crouch End where her father Edward studied film production at the London School of Film Technique in Covent Garden for 2 years. Her family eventually moved back to U.S.A. when she was 11 years old and settled down in Grand Rapids, Michigan where her father ran a film post-production company and her mother worked as a computer analyst. She attended City Middle/High School, a program for gifted students with a strong emphasis on the humanities in Michigan.
She began to like acting when she was involved in the high school and community theater productions. She attended Goodman Theater School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990. Her first appearance on television was in 1993, where she had a guest appearance on the collegiate drama Class of '96 on the fledgling Fox Network. But it was the role of Dana Scully on The X-Files, that has earned her many followers. It was there too, she met assistant art director Clyde Klotz, whom she married and with whom she had a daughter, Piper Maru, in 1994. But later, they were divorced. She married Julian Ozanne, a documentary filmmaker in December 2004 on Lamu's island of Shella, off the coast of Africa. She had roles in a handful of films during the run of The X-Files and starred in The House of Mirth, an adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel of the same name.
Ever since The X-Files has ended, she was involved in several stage productions and worked on various film projects. She has also done narrative work for documentaries on scientific topics. In 2005, she was in a BBC television adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Bleak House. She has recently completed work on a film version of the novel Tristram Shandy and to be released later in the year.

Gillian Anderson Quotes |
| |
Gillian Anderson: Be of service. Whether you make yourself available to a friend or co-worker, or you make time every month to do volunteer work, there is nothing that harvests more of a feeling of empowerment than being of service to someone in need. | Gillian Anderson: I also respond very strongly to characters I have not done before ... something I can really sink my teeth into, and what's scary, and what terrifies me, because that's where I need to go. | Gillian Anderson: (about her X-Files character, Dana Scully) I am more spontaneous than my character. | Gillian Anderson: I believe people are in our lives for a reason. We're here to learn from each other. | Gillian Anderson: I hope everyone that is reading this is having a really good day. And if you are not, just know that in every new minute that passes you have an opportunity to change that. | Gillian Anderson: I love it when women come up to me and tell me I'm a positive influence on their lives and the lives of their young daughters. That's a great feeling. | Gillian Anderson: I truly believe that we can overcome any hurdle that lies before us and create the life we want to live. I have seen it happen time and time again. | Gillian Anderson: I try in my life to follow my heart in terms of what moves me and what is important to me. I know what it feels like to do things that are soul-decaying, and a lot of the large aspects of life in Hollywood, in the stereotypical way, I find unbelievably soul-decaying, and I choose, albeit frustratingly to other people in my life, not to expose myself to too much of that. | Gillian Anderson: Just remember, you can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, perseverance, and facing your fears. | Gillian Anderson: Let's practice what we preach, and with the acceptance that we expect from others, let's stop being so damn judgmental and crucifying everyone who doesn't fit in to our boxed-in perception of what is right. |
