Born in Santiago, Chile on December 9, 1972, Leonor Varela is the daughter of a scientist and a dancer; she has one sister and two brothers. Her family moved to Costa Rica when she was young in order to escape the rule of a military regime in Chile; they then moved to Germany, the U.S., and France. In the 1990s, her family returned to Chile; she, however, remained in France, where she studied acting at the Neils Arestrup's School, The Ecole de Passage, and Conservatoire Superieur de Paris.
She began appearing in tv and movies in 1995, with her first role playing the character Annette in Pony Trek. After another movie, she was then cast in the Chilean television show Tic Tac. In 1998, she appeared as a nameless beauty in The Man in The Iron Mask with Leonardo Di Caprio; and in 1999, appeared with Billy Zane in Cleopatra in the title role. This lead to a relationship with Zane, which ended two years later. She has since appeared in various movies and television shows, such as Blade II and Arrested Development. Her upcoming projects for 2006 include: Where God Left His Shoes with John Leguizamo; The Curse of King Tut's Tomb (tv) with Casper Van Dien; and Goal!2 with Rutger Hauer.
