Charlize Theron

Charlize is the daughter of Charles and Gerda Theron. Her father is of French descent, while her mother is of German descent. She grew up on a farm near Johannesburg. When she was 13 years old, she was sent to a boarding school. At the age of 15, her father died when her mother shot him in self defense. She studied ballet dancing and has danced in The Swan Lake and the Nutcracker production. After she has arrived at USA, she worked at the Joffrey Ballet in New York and also as a photo model. Her career as a ballet dancer was ended becuse of a knee injury.

Her first role in a movie was a non-speaking role in Children of the Corn III. Then, she began to have bigger role in movies such as The Devil's Advocate, The Cider House Rules, and Mighty Joe Young which made her name well known. However, it was the role of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos, in the film Monster (2003) that won her praises from her peers for her great performance. In February 2004, Charlize won the Best Actress award at the 76th Academy Awards and became the first South African to ever win an Oscar for Best Actress.
