Michael Mitchell grew up in Colleyville, Texas, the second of four boys born to Bill and Cindy Mitchell. Starting from his role in a 6th grade skit of The Emperor's New Clothes, he fell in love with acting.

After he graduated from Colleyville Heritage High School, he started attending SMU in the fall of 2002 on a theatrical scholarship. Although he was informed that he was good enough to proceed to Hollywood, Michael insisted on continuing his education and getting a degree. After his freshman year, he spent the summer knocking on agents' doors in Hollywood, to no avail. It wasn't until his father moved him into the Highland Gardens Hotel in Hollywood that Michael met his big break. Over the next year, Michael started auditions while still taking classes at SMU.

Five days after the end of the 2004 fall semester , he auditioned for Phil of the Future and was told he had the part within a month. He moved to Los Angeles a few weeks later.
