When Tyler was eleven, both of his parents died and his sister in Anderson, South Carolina took him in and raised him. Tyler attended Clemson University and earned a bachelor's degree in geology. He became a production assistant for "Fat Man and Little Boy" in 1988, and later became an assistant apprentice film editor. He also worked as an extra.

As a hobby, Tyler plays keyboards at and writes music. He likes to play tennis, golf, and jog in his free time. James Michael Tyler is married to a personal trainer named Barbara. They make their home in Hollywood, California.
