Cowboy Troy was born on December 18, 1970 in Victoria, Texas. In 1989, he began performing in a unique style he dubbed "hick-hop", which mixes country, rock, rap, and tejano musical styles. In 2004, Cowboy Troy joined the MusikMafia group and appeared on Big & Rich's smash hit album, Horse of a Different Color. Later that year, Cowboy Troy toured with Tim McGraw and Big & Rich as a background vocalist.

In 2005, Cowboy Troy released his first major album, Loco Motive, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts. From the album, Troy released "I Play Chicken with the Train," which quickly became a fan favorite, but only reached #48 on the charts.

In March 2006, Cowboy Troy will co-host the fourth season of USA's Nashville Star with Wynonna Judd.
